Google
launches Hot Trends.
Google has launched a Hot Trends feature to its
Google Trends web hub.
The home page of www.google.com/trends
now has a Hot Trends section which lists the top ten queries for that day.
The page also has a More Hot Trends link which lists the top 100 queries for that
day.
As well as that day's Hot Trends, visitors can also visit the history
to see the hottest queries for any previous day. Google Trends upgraded the trends
history to show not only country data in the regions box, but also state and even
city detail. At the present time it is only available in the United States.
Apparently
there is some debate about what constitutes a Hot Trend and Google insiders say
they use a very sophisticated algorithm to determine what is hot by monitoring
sudden rises in any query phrase which is not in the norm for that query. In simple
terms, the higher the rise, the hotter the query.
And a Google insider
also confirmed there is a "hotness level" score for these queries, the
hottest is "volcanic", followed by "on fire," "spicy,"
"medium" and "mild."
