Google's
Jagger Update, what we have seen so far.
You'll most likely be aware that this week has been
one of those landmark periods for Google search results. We haven't seen a week
this significant since Nov2003 and the Florida update.
The Oct2005 update,
now named update Jagger, has seen tens of thousands of sites drop dramatically
from the top places of Googles index.
We are told by Google that the
update is likely to take another couple of weeks, however
early indications point to the main casualties of Jagger being those sites with
optimised content.
So what's going on;
Government,
educational and directory sites are appearing higher in Google's index.
Sites
with a higher content value are more prominent.
Sites with a wide profile
of high link status remain.
This update appears to be targeted at
"over optimisation". Prior to this week many buy-on-line sites were
more visible, the problem is that buy-on-line sites are generally not authoritative,
therefore they relied heavily on content and link optimisation.
So what
does Google appear to be filtering on?
Reciprocal linking
Site
wide links
Same ip address, ip "c block"
Optimisation
cluttered content
Over use of text repeats
Over use of text emphasizing
How
do we know this, we have been frantically testing over the last week. In one significant
move we pulled a site up over 70 places in Google's index from just cleaning up
the content.
