Car vs Plane, the final chapter.
Picking up the from the earlier escapades from the
three amigos, where Jem and Martin (the Shaw brothers) head off once again
to bring back Martins recently acquired 1941 Piper J3 Cub, now hangered
at an airfield near Dieppe.
Just to recap the reason for Jem to escort the plane is the fact that
the Piper has only a 10 gallon fuel load, at a consumption of approx 3.5
gallons per hour, and a top speed of 75 mph means it need fuel every 140-180
miles or 2 - 2.5 hrs. However most of the airfields Martin and Adrian
will be needing to land at won't have fueling facilities. So Jem, having
filled a load of gerry cans and carrying them in the boot of his car,
is going to drive the whole thing.

The final
trip
Part one saw Jem racing around the French countryside in his Vectra
- doing a Clarkson, with Martin and Adrian doing their best to emulate the motley
pair known as Slow (May) and Hamster (Hammond). I'll let them argue which is which.
They got the Cub from its former home in Berdoues up to Niort.
Anyway
part deux saw them get the plane from Niort to Dieppe. The guys doing the trip
in style in a Bentley, Jem still screaming "POWER!" and terrifying his
passengers, but hey if you know the guy you'd expect nothing less.
Part 3 was supposed to
be flying another aircraft over to Dieppe and then fly them both back to Dieppe.
Regrettably the weather conditions during February put pay to this, however undeterred
the last chapter is to be done using a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland.
Armed
with TomTom SatNav they head off to collect the Cub once again.
The weather at Dieppe is looking good, cold but clear, and the wind appears
to be dropping as the day progresses.
After the flight checks, and the mandatory
fuel examination to ensure no water has got into the tank - not a great feeling
half way over the channel to find that one out - Adrian and Martin take to the
skies again leaving Jem on the airfield.
This time he has Martins 2.7litre
Jeep to go play with, here we go again. Although I think he had more fun comparing
the built in Traffic Master system with the TomTom to be honest.
Martin and Adrian have to refuel at Le Touquet. They were making much better
progress than the Jeep. By the time Jem exits the tunnel he gets a message from
Adrian to say that they were on the ground at Headcorn, enjoying a good old fashioned
English breakfast.
The Jeeps performance so far is good, and whist it has
significant performance it is certainly lacking when compared to the vehicles
from trip one and two. Jem contemplates "wonder if there's a job going on
Top Gear?" Maybe not Jem, you might have to wear a sports jacket with blue
jeans!
Jem
manages to make good progress and finally manages to pull into the car park at
Old Buckingham. No sign of the Cub yet, ten minutes later he spots a dot in the
afternoon sky.
With the Cub home safe on English soil you'd have
thought that was the end of the story.
Well not quite, whilst Jem was certainly
enjoying himself in the cars, he has two passions; motorbikes (which, after getting
knocked off last year has been dampened slightly) and aeroplanes. So he couldn't,
after 2000 miles of cars, wait any longer - he had to get a flight.
What
came next was certainly not what anyone expected - and the whole thing was caught
on video.
The rest of the tale
I'm going to leave to Jem to tell for himself- a video is also on it's way.
