Lycos Moving out of Search Engines.

Lycos
is officially closing up it's search engine business, In two significant announcements this week, Lycos said it would be shedding its portal strategy. The company has inked a 5-year deal with Real Media to outsource display ad serving, ad sales and analytics for its Internet properties.

Lycos U.S. stressed that the new business model capitalizes on their experience in online publishing, dating and search. The Company says the revenue potential for its new model lies in subscriptions and contextually targeted ads.

Currently Google provides the contextual ads for Lycos through a deal with its parent, Terra Lycos. Lycos is planning a relaunch its homepage in the next few weeks as a site dedicated to "personal connections."

The company is hoping users will convert into paid subscribers of premium services or on to bundled packages. Lycos is confident they can platform a dating customer into a subscriber to health, finance, job, family, or other categories yet to be devised.
