Google
to buy YouTube.
Google
is hoping to buy video-sharing website YouTube for an estimated $1.6bn (£857m).
The price reflects the phenomenal growth of YouTube which has gone from 58,000
visitors just 14 months ago, to more than 12m per month according to ComScore
MediaMetrix.
The deal could be sealed in less than a week
as Google is keen to get its online ad program Adwords rolled out across YouTube
as quickly as possible. Google isn't the first company to express an interest
in YouTube, with Viacom and Rupert Murdoch's Newscorp - which already owns MySpace
- reportedly keen on making a bid. It is understood that YouTube favours the buy
out from Google as it avoids the issue of running content from rival media companies.
If the sale goes ahead, media analysts will keep a careful eye on how
the record labels will react, because they have been using YouTube to showcase
their artists and make money. Warner has previously done a deal with YouTube to
make videos and other content available legally and other record labels including
ENI, are in talks to do similar.
Google's rival Yahoo! recently launched
a video-sharing website Yahoo! Video to encourage users to upload their own content.
