Microsoft
is said to be developing their own search engine to rival that of the likes of
Google. Google
is at the moment the most popular search engine in the world, followed by Yahoo!
and MSN.
Current
rumours are that Microsoft
will be integrating their new search engine into their upcoming operating system
"Longhorn", expected for release during 2005. Those who remember the
Netscape versus Internet Explorer battle of the 90's will be feeling quite nostalgic.
In the Netscape versus IE war, Microsoft put IE into their then new operating
system Windows 95.
With pretty much
every computer having Internet Explorer built in as standard, the failing Netscape
released the now infamous Version 6.0. Riddled with bugs, Netscape's fate was
sealed, and the rest is history.
With
a search tool integrated into Longhorn, many computers will have this new search
tool as standard. If Google pull a "Netscape" (another
Florida?) their fate will too be sealed. There may be a new search engine giant
next year, and it might be in your operating system.
