BBC strikes Google-YouTube deal. The BBC has struck a deal with YouTube which will see three new channels showcasing news and entertainment clips. The deal will help the corporation reach the estimated 70 million users of the Google-owned video sharing website in a bid to drive extra traffic to its own website. The broadcaster will also get a share of the advertising revenue generated by traffic to the new YouTube channels - one for news and two for entertainment. Its director general, Mark Thompson, called the deal a ground-breaking partnership which will see the BBC using YouTube as a promotional vehicle. It has stressed that the BBC will not be distributing content like full-length programmes. The corporation is following in the footsteps of several of the large US broadcasters who already have similar agreements with website. But others such as Viacom have demanded YouTube remove tens of thousands of clips because of copyright issues. The BBC said it would not be hunting down all
BBC-copyrighted clips already uploaded by YouTube members. It will however, look
to swap poor quality clips with the real thing, or remove content which infringes
other people's copyright, like sport, or that had been edited or altered in a
way that would damage the BBC's brand.
